NF Decade Premiere

NF Decade Review – By Josh Shelly

Lackey section was super sick, very roach-esque editing and song, though there is only one Roach. Skipp and Hubb sections were insane of course. Tahiti was mental: Ross, Skip, and Eddie were owning late scoops and shockwave battles. Rawlins and Hardy sections were ridiculous as expected, the last invert of Hardy’s section was pretty classic. Tons of other good stuff too; helicopter footage, Ross/Dre, etc. Overall I’m super pumped on this vid, definitely a huge step-up from their last releases…other highlights were Murdock’s yelling, The Dawn preview, and Daniel Thomas Bridge III getting kicked out and passing out multiple times. I hope everyone can make the next stops on the tour, I almost guarantee it will get you amped.

First off, check the new trailers for The Dawn and Rookies projects. The Dawn is a feature that was split between fellow Clamdiggers Zach Nicholas and Kellen Keene. It showcases their recent adventures in Oz, Mex, Hawaii, and Cali, and is set to release in late September. Judging from the trailer and their previous work, this flick should provide a little shakeup from your usual viewing experience.

Secondly, you can live the NF premiere vicariously through our grande Decade Etcetera, equipped with a mini-review that was penned by fellow boogie video connoisseur Josh Shelly. The first half of the feature was shot at the first stop of the tour in Pismo Beach courtesy of Adam Terpening, while the second half was shot at the final California destination in the depths of good ‘ole Chula Vista. It’s one of the only coming-out parties of the year for us spongers here in Cali so it always provides a good stage to let loose and a rare opportunity to watch the sport that we all know and love on the big screen.

Lastly, Alex provided us with some shots from his Indo trip. Luckily camels have three eyelids or we could have had a real mess on our hands. Also, rumors of Pismo’s Josh Warthen on reality TV were validated this week. After producing Adolescence some years ago, he replaced his boogie with a 9 iron and won a seat on SDSU’s golf team. Now he’s breaking hearts on the Golf Channel’s Big Break. Tune in on October 3rd to watch the mythical Warthen in action.

Link of the Week: We decided to split this spot between the new releases from Chula Vista Media (Happy Days) and 5-South (The Mixtape Experiment). Both are well deserving and both show some Cali love so show some love back with the “Buy Now” button if you can.

Small Kine Update

muhammad-camel.jpgAlex updated us post-G-land and is currently weaving his way back to the states amidst Taipei typhoons. Sounds like he left a little Camel residue behind on the reef while getting pitted at Speedies. Pics to come shortly. Adam Terpening and Cale Moore added to the assemblage of images from their mainland adventure here. Also, Ben Player earned his second win of the year in Chile. Looks like he’s well on his way to a second world title.

Link of the week: The new IBA Tour website isn’t done quite yet but judging from all the links on the site there should be a banquet of content for us cyber-folk to feast upon in the near future.

Homerun Derby

pismo_flier.jpgMurdock supplied all the dirt on Mex for us. From god-awful mudflap creations to French “gongbongs” to 24 hour barbiturate bus rides, you’re in for a treat with this mini-novel. Willie’s still frolicking in coffee country; babysitting red light district illegitimates, hunting for waves off the beaten path, and spreading the gospel of the mini-shaka to both believers and naysayers alike. Lastly, Alex sent us what may have been his final transmission from the land of Indo before a 7.5 would shake Jakarta. At least we know that the ASA will still live on.

Back on the home front we got word from Ryan Loughlin that Ralphy is still loving the single life as one of the few surviving straight male hairdressers on the face of the planet:

I happened to be in downtown SLO getting drunk when who do I run into but Raphly….somehow I end up on their party bus with Josh stripping and the bus driver’s wife doing headstands up against the stripper pole. The shot is horrible quality because it’s from my phone but you get the idea!

We just received the NF X premiere flyer with all the details on the annual Fair Oaks mayhem. A little teaser has surfaced on editor Todd Barnes’ site, quality indeed! The DVD-included tix look like a steal.

Arica is still going down as well. On first glance I mistook the finalists for a World Cup roster, but make no mistake these Euros and Latinos are willing and able, taking down all the big guns along the way. With 2 Americans not named Jeff still remaining, hopefully we can get a fellow countryman on the podium this year. Here are the remaining heats:

Quarters: Man on Man heats

Heat 1 – Ivan Hernandez x Manuel Centeno

Heat 2 – Yeray Martinez x Pierre Luis Costes

Heat 3 – Dave Hubbard x Hugo Pinheiro

Heat 4 – Paul Benco x Ben Player

Link of the Week: SCCOOS looks clean and gives you all the up-to-the-minute wave info you can muster.

Indonesia 2007: Statom

Stayed in Kuta last night and tonight, but tomorrow I’m heading to Padang to stay for a few days. Kuta is a pretty crazy tourist town with all kinds of crazy Euros and Ozzies running around. I ran into some full on shaka bra surfers from the Bay Area (thanks to my A’s hat) and got some solid buzz-on at a bar watching this sick cover band who busted out the best rendition of “Sweet Child of Mine” I’ve ever witnessed.

Yesterday I got in from the airport late and just surfed at Kuta Beach which is pretty gay, but today I surfed Padang for the first time. It was inconsistent but really fun on the sets and luckily not very crowded. It was only like head high so only the end bowl was really working, so the waves were short but really hollow and shallow. The waves should be picking up over the next few days so I should get some solid Padang before I go to G-Land.

Meals are only like $1-3 and hotel rooms are only like $5-8 bucks, but getting around is kinda expensive because you have to get a cab from Kuta to Padang which is like $10 each way (it’s like a half hour away). The other option is to rent a scooter (only like $3 a day) but everyone drives completely insane so I’m pretty over that. Anyway, I’ll be staying out at Padang after tomorrow so I won’t have to worry about driving anymore. The food is good and the local people here are all friendly and super chill.

padang_lineup03.jpgToday was pretty sick, double session at DOH Padang with Rizal Tanjung, some other Ozzie/Bali/Euro pros I don’t know, and Tim Jones getting Jonesy on the inside. The wave is really fast and long and kinda hard to make through both sections unless you get a solid set wave. I got a bunch of scraps, a couple solid ones, and one good long barrel full ASA style that made my trip so far. The bombs were fucking nuts, I was sketching. The local surfers here definitely own it.

padang_lineup06.jpgI’m glad I got the hell out of Kuta , I’m staying at this kinda ghetto place right next to Padang called Padang Sari. Super friendly people, $5/night, cheap food, and right across the street from one of the best waves in the world… can’t ask for much more. I’m gonna surf here for the rest of the swell then I’m going to G-Land later in the week. I guess G-Land is always bigger than anywhere else so it should be solid with another swell coming in at the end of the week.

August 10
padang_lineup04.jpgGot some super fun and uncrowded Padang over the last few days as the swell dropped. Right before dark at low tide has been the call, with only a few guys out getting pitted over the end bowl. I got some fun overhead drainers with only a couple other Ozzie boogies out last night, it was definitely the most rewarding session I’ve had so far. There were tons of waves for everyone, the lighting was insane, and the vibe in the water was really chill.

paxcou_family.jpgAfterwards I cruised over to Paxcou’s house for a little dinner party with all his French friends who are in town visiting. I took down some beers and grubbed pasta while all these nice folks did their best to speak English for me. Paxcou has a sick modern house up in the hills only 15 minutes from Padang and is definitely living the dream. After dinner he showed us some insane footy of Ben Player owning Padang on that big swell that hit a few months ago. After watching it I definitely think Ben could be considered the best in the world right now, especially with the way he’s been owning the comps lately.

gland_crew.jpgSupposed to be coming home tomorrow but there’s a giant fucking super-typhoon heading for Taipei (where my layover is) so who knows when I’ll get back.

Got G-Land fucking sick but pretty damn crowded. Still got some sick ones with old school Ozzie Riptide rippers Nick Gibbs, Jason Spence, and some DKer named Phil who got the wave of the trip.

gland_face.jpgTook a fucking headshot to the reef and cut my face to shit, it looked intense for a day or two but the swelling has subsided now and the camel face has returned. Low tide there is sketchy as fuck with lots of waves ending on near dry reef. There was a major standup paddle-battle at Moneytrees but the boogies mostly stuck to the inside section which was smaller but had some fucking smokers coming through. I got a ton of empty shots that I’ll send ya when I got back and one kinda gay shot of me from some creepy dude shooting on a boat.
