Best in the West

img_5684.jpg
5 South got a little taste of the 101 North in the 2nd Annual Best in the West dropknee invitational. It wasn’t an easy road to victory for the boys from Pismo though. After being thrown into the loser’s bracket in the double elimination formatted event, the Rookies had to snap, carve, and float their way through all three of the remaining three-member teams which was reminiscent of their fate in the previous year’s event. Luckily they only needed that first initial heat to brush off the minimal sleep, long drive, green haze, and Steinlager stench that had consumed their past 24 hours.

Willie pulled his weight with some quick-hit combos in Round 1, but Brett and Cale fell victim to the long lulls that plagued the early heats of the event. Losing to Grodzen’s team and facing elimination they were pitted against Team DBK in Round 2. With Pelton, Sani, and O’side’s Kurt these guys had some serious talent and homefield advantage. Roldan came out swinging after a frustrating first heat and shelved the combo routine for some serious lip bashes. With Willie and Cale gaining confidence and linking some quality tricks all the way to the inside, the Rookies were on their way back to a much anticipated rematch with Team Grodzen who had lost to Team Long/Hamilton/Gero in the winner’s bracket.

Grodzen was on a mission on this day and was not to be ousted after his fiery message board claims a few days prior and the finals now on the line. Both teams scrapped it out with lulls again being problematic. Joe actually got the best waves of the round but it was the consistent team effort of the Rookies led by Cale that allowed the Pismo kids to meet up with Team Long/Hamilton/Gero in the finale. This time it was old-timer Henry Long who would dominate the round but it wouldn’t matter as the three-headed monster of Roldan/Moore/Richerson had been gaining momentum throughout the event and would not be stopped after coming this far with their backs to the wall. Mechanically taking apart the Pismo-ish O’side peaks, Long’s high scoring heat of the contest was narrowly edged out by the Rookies as they claimed the victory for the second year in a row.

Joe Grodzen floating. He surfed surprisingly well but was fuming after a narrow loss in Round 3, pulling the e-brake in the competitor’s area while raising a middle finger to all from his tripped out Scion before hightailing the fuck outta there. OK maybe we made up that last part.

Chilling on the rocks in between heats we were kept entertained by shocking comment after shocking comment from Quaker Oat Brains and Willie’s overpriced and underhemmed Patagonia shorts.

boogie9

dphilnugginrevo.jpgIn an age of drones, clones, and overproduced prone, we can finally breathe a breath of fresh air. With all the attention down under and across the pond of late, something got lost along the way: the Hawaiian roots of our sport. Enter Timmy Hamilton, the man behind that shroud of BOOGIE NATION mystery. What exactly did he do? He picked up a camera and started filming his friends just like any other stoked grom would do. The difference is that his friends got good, really good. These are the same friends that are now pushing Hawaii back into the limelight again with a new underground twist. Timmy was kind enough to answer a few questions and to show off some of his framegrabs from his upcoming release Boogie Nation 9 in our newest brimming Etcetera feature.

Speaking of Hawaii, The Rock is heating up with the arrival of the Pismo groms. Murdock is claiming prime conditions and solid swell on the way. He is also claiming Sandy Sphinx’s peach ‘stache. Keep checking his blog here as stories arise. Ross McBride is on his way back for Round 2 as well this coming weekend. Substituting a strict El Pollo Loco diet for plate lunches should be a stretch, but he’s obviously thinking of other things with recent NF posts like these.

The Best in the West contest is on for this Saturday! We called the troops and got the confirmation on the incoming from Brett, Willie, and Cale. I’m sure there will be plenty of open-faced sandwiches ready to be smacked in t-minus 3 days with a solid NW on the way and good conditions in the forecast. Rookies will be upping the purse with an ice cold 30 rack of Buddy Love to the winning team. Here’s Chanus’ outlook for the event:

The Pismo Rookies Crew has been assembled again and was seen training on the south side of the Pismo pier this past month. They have been on a maple syrup garlic detox that ended about 3 weeks ago and since have been on a strict regimen of 1 hr of yoga, 3 hour surf sessions, followed by a 30 min. warm-down stretch session, and 58 minute meditation, all organic meals of fresh vegetables, fruit, complex carbohydrates and only water and grape Pedialyte to drink. Brett had some especially shocking defensive tactics – his defense against the Tongan-foot-in-the-ass was flawless. They are in shape, getting shacked and throwing tail, they will win.

Double Oh Eight

wedgesgalore-copy.jpgWe’re starting the new year off with a little etcetera present from Ted Slaughter. Ted’s been kept busy mixing classes at UCLA with south swells at the Wedge for the past 3 years. At only 21 years old, the kid’s got a bright future in front of him. Check his newly revised site at Invertbb.com.

Back on the homefront we’ve got a lot of people on the move with the arrival of the new year. Delmore’s moved back to his beloved lamb country to oversee things with Cruella de Del, hunt for some anonymous SLO County myspace cougs, and hammer down some fresh new Asthmatic cuts. Terpening’s off to Spain to spaid some ET’s, get his 5-o’clock shadow rubbed down by some looney photog, and check out the local school and surf scene. Pismo wall rats Frank Robles and Sandy Sphinctor are off to Hawaii with hopes of losing their virginity at Backpacker’s, dawning some semi-empty Pipe, and getting the hell out of the freezing inside left doldrums of Pismo. They’ll probably encounter The Weimann, who just left today straight off a Yogi’s Long Island Ice Tea New Year’s binge. There’s also rumors of Richerson making the move to Central America for a couple months. Surely his stay will somehow involve a rodeo, multiple Modello tall cans, and an odd caress with an underage local.

5-South is bringing back the popular Best in the West dropknee competition. Willie, Brett, and Cale will be the three headed monster repping Rookies at this sunuvabich. Will Darren, Chanus, and Whitaker be making it down for a second Pizzy team? We’re not sure, but we’ll definitely be on hand to get some coverage for this event.

Name: Tim Hamilton
Age: 21
Current Residence: Atooi
Years Shooting: 7
Equipment: Canon. Most of 9 was shot on a GL2, but I’m currently using an XH-A1, HV20, Stickney housing, Viper Fins, and Final Cut Pro.
Favorite Place to Shoot: I dont’ know. That’s tough because I’d almost always rather be surfing. I guess anywhere that looks better on video than it really is.
Inspirations: Oshi Grady, Bud Miyamoto, Flanagan, David Phillips, Pypyr Lluellen – underground Hawaii bodyboarders.

*************************************************************************

What videos inspired you as a grom?
Kauai Classic, Boyle vids, early No Friends, Boogie Knights, Smorgasbord.

How did Boogie Nation first get started?
When Bodyboarding Magazine died, and some other mags came and went, I wanted to do something for the sport. Since I didn’t know how to make a magazine, I decided to make a video.

Where did you travel while filming Boogie Nation 9?
Mexico, Tahiti, Australia, Philippines, California, Hawaii.

Which destination did you enjoy most?
California.

What’s shaping up to be the best segment of the video?
Damasque.

Will there be a California premiere?
I think so. Last time only 30 people showed up and we lost a lot of money. But maybe, with enough hype and a better venue, Cali will support this time.

Any plans for more vids after this release?
No. I’m going to focus on my bodyboarding for a while and maybe shoot some stills here and there. I’d like to make a bodyboarding show on TV in the future.

What do you do in your free time when you’re not manning the lens?
Edit, bodyboard, paintball, learn, hunt chickens, halo3 (majestichonu), work random jobs.

I’ve seen a couple stills shot by you of late as well. How do you like that for a change from video?
It’s fun. I don’t know, I’m not too serious with it.

I’m seeing a lot of dk in your framegrabs. Are you bringing back the Jack-stance?
Yes. I get to shoot the best Jack-Stance specialists in the world. Between Bud Miyamoto, Dave Hubbard, Flanagan, Kyle Maligro and Cass Sonoda, there will be a lot of really good dropknee in 9.

Lastly, can you give us three North Shore predictions for the remainder of the year?
-Pipe will be crowded everyday.
-Guys will get career waves.
-Great late season.
