The Lost Boys

colima1.jpgWe received our first visual confirmation of the Pismo crew running amuck in Mainland and it ain’t pretty, that’s for sure. I’m still trying to decipher the accompanying email for any clues as to what the heck is actually going on down there. But as you can see from the text below, your guess is as good as mine. This is the kinda stuff we find on an unsuspecting Monday night in our inbox. Props to the unidentified email dispatcher who apparently hails from Mazatlan. Mocooooooooooo!!!

this is the pismo and mexican boys picture from the last party at colima
colima was awesomeee jajaja kellen make a new definition for the word dancing
murdoch has found a girl that can dominate him (a angry bitch because he drop the buzz al over her) hahaha!! and the boys were all drunk!!

Mocooooooooooo!!!jajajaja

In other news we’ve got the No Friends premiere of ‘Decade‘ due out next month which will be their 10th installment to date. The premiere tour kicks off in our beloved Pismo on August 23rd and marches down the coast through Mission Viejo and San Diego on the 24th and 25th, respectively. The boys at NF have put a lot of effort into this one, traveling the world many times over and hiring on Todd Barnes of ‘VIDEO’ fame to edit the flick. Our favorite jean-short-wearing sibling filmakers already gave the thing two big thumbs up, so I’m sure there are some good things in store for viewers next month. Check our boy Wilbur’s artwork on the DVD cover! Oh yeah, and happy birthday to our art guy Dug Baker who I’m sure is putting on a performance of his own at R&D’s right now.

Well I Think I’m Losing My Mind This Time

manny_img_5250.jpgHas national security gone that far? Have they actually gone and blocked our friggin’ swells too? If you haven’t got a summer trip in the works or haven’t already gone on one, I feel for you. Luckily Pismo has stayed somewhat sane down in Mexico and have kept us in the loop via an online chronicling of their trip highlights. We’ve also got a new etcetera to greet your weary eyes. This one is bursting at the seams with sheepskin, cornrows, and Texan bodyboarders. Also the friendly boogers at SOL even kept us entertained with a link of their newest movie here (~200 mb).

Brett “Sheepskin” Lillyman post-Blacks session. Brett roomed with Toby Player and Simon Thornton for some time while living in a northern Sydney suburb, honing his big wave skills. You might get the idea that the guy is mute upon first meeting him. But give Lillyman some solid waves, or a few beers for that matter, and the Sheepskin will unravel.

Chris Burkard will be married in less than a week. I’m scared.

Tyler Danek stretching one out at the Wavehouse in San Diego. You would never have thought that this guy can’t even swim the way he owns these pseudo-wave parks.

Say hello to my little friend. Sundaran Gillespie rightfully giving Baker props.

Before all his surfs Ben Player goes through this bizarre board molding routine where he builds up a pile of sand and flexes his boogie about it in a reverse rocker fashion. Can’t argue with it when he’s throwing pop reverses like these off of nothing during the Pipe contest.

Going face to face with the infamous Keiki shorebreak is a daunting task. Unidentified about to meet his maker.

Enrique del Solar rides for Toobs and keeps it pretty underground in the San Diego area. Here he is snapping away in La Jolla.

In Flux

Got dropped a couple random emails this week from some of Pizzy’s finest. Kellen Keene, who is apart of the circus act currently touring through Mexi, sent us this little number:

Waves have been real fun, at least head high everyday. We have 6 people and 3 mullets. A couple heavy nights of boozing, and the build up of tonight’s buzz on session has been just as gruelling as the arrival of the new gay ass iphone. We have like 8 Mexican friends going, 2 Americans, Edgar, El Jefe, and ourselves. ICE (editor’s note: ICE was an all-time club in Manzanillo with $10 all-you-can drink mayhem and the hottest isolated gene pool I have ever witnessed. RIP.) got shut down due to a drug bust but we’re going somewhere similar in Colima – 10 buck cover charge and you got an open bar. The trip has been taken over by everyone trying to attempt their most extreme Jeremy Wright impersonation as disgusting and as often as possible, you can only imagine that mixed with buzz on. We’re doing a lot of filming and shooting, definitetly getting the job done there. I think our time in Colima is coming to an end and our journey towards Puerto begins tomorrow with a 25 hour bus ride.

Willie sent us his regards as well where things aren’t quite as peachy as of yet:

Briggs and I are in Jaco, got here last night after 24 hours of travel. It was a bit taxing and we are recovering. His bag was lost so we are waiting for TACA to deliver it here. He is not stressing yet, which is lucky. The surf here is a bit meager, head high and mush burger. We are roughly planning to head to San Jose tomorrow and Nicaragua on the next bus. Costa is expensive and we want to get to the land of cheap and less touristy.

childhood.jpgLastly, Mark Miller sent us a little tidbit from his youth. A young Mike Stewart throwing the shaka for a young Wilbur at an old Bud Tour Contest atop the Pismo pier. Classic. If I remember correctly, Stewbags took this event in fine fashion – Uggboots, lycra shorts, and wrap-around Oakleys included.

Here Comes the Hotstepper

070907-seaweed.jpgWe bring to you the Willie Richerson Interview, fresh with a spicy little edit that makes you feel like it’s 1994 all over again. Did you know that Willie grew up on a vegetable farm, benched twice his weight at the age of 12, and looks up to an 8 pound 10 ounce baby Jesus for inspiration? Me neither. Here’s a funny little anecdote from the accompanying email I received from old half-thumb himself about his interview responses:

I smoked some herbals over at Murdock’s and came home and sat down and started writing. I don’t think I would have finished without getting a bit stoney. At first I couldn’t write but then my block gave way after I remembered how to type, the Humboldt love then guided me through a brief period of personal reflection and sarcasm.

As for other news, Ben Player took home $3k at the Shark Island Competition in what looked to be epic 4-5 foot surf. He’s looking to dethrone Hubb who ended up finishing a respectable 4th and can almost pay for his flight home now. Stewart is still defying age, whipping kids half his age in all his heats and grabbing 3rd with fellow team member and SA resident Mark McCarthy finishing a surprising 2nd to round out the final. Next tour stop is scheduled for Chile in August so stay tuned.

Lastly a quick shout to the bulls parading at Lore Studio, a Rookies friendly company. A few years ago these guys were barely scrounging enough change to throw a shirt over their backs and now they’re the ones selling them for $30 a pop. Congrats.
